Linked books

Linked books are an independent presentation created in Link-it Create. A Linked book you can use in any computer without having access to the program Link-it.
If the children, for instance, are allowed to take home a disc with a Linked Book, they are able to read by themselves. If they get stuck on a word, all they have to do is to click on it to get the word in Sign Language.
You can create your own Linked Books with Link-it Create!
In the Linked Book “Little Red Riding Hood”, you can read the classic fairy tale in English and you can see the text translated into ASL.
The text is linked sentence by sentence with right links, which you activate by clicking with the right mouse button on the sentence in the text window or on the sign in the video window. In the same manner you can left click the words, or a part of a sentence, in the text that is marked in bold to get its equivalent in American Sign Language. You can also left click on a sign in the video window to highlight the corresponding word in the text window.
Since American Sign Language and English have different grammatical structures it is not possible to link every specific word to a specific sign. A sign can correspond to several English words, and sometimes it is the other way around.
If you click on a word in the text and see its equivalent in American Sign Language, it doesn’t necessarily mean that this word would be translated like this in every context. The comparisons are tied to the current context. It is not always obvious how words and signs should be linked. It is possible to choose other criteria for how to link the text. In spite of this, we believe that by exploring the text and comparing American Sign Language and English, it is possible to learn a lot about both languages.
