Common questions about linked books

Question no 1:
I have created a Linked book. Where shall I save it? How do I place it on a CD?

Answer:

When you create a Linked book the program will suggest that you save it in the "Linked Books Distribution" folder. You can very well use this folder or specify a location that you find more suitable. (In a school network, the network administrator may have changed Link-it to suggest another folder than "Linked Books Distribution.)

Read more about Linked books in the checklist "Create Linked book".

Question no 2:
I have made a Linked Book and I have this problem: when I put it in a pc, it appears this message:
"This system must be restarted to complete the installation. Press the OK button to restart this computer. Press Cancel to return to Windows without restarting".

Answer:

When a linked book is started the program lb.exe first checks the computer´s system components. In some circumstances (if the computer is a bit old) the system components need to be updated in order for the linked book to work on the computer. When the system components have been updated it must be restarted to prevent problems with other programs in the computer.

The restart only has to be preformed the first time a Linked book is started in a computer. The next time a CD with a Linked book is placed in the same computer the Linked book will be started immediately since the system has already been updated.

Question no 3:
I can't start my Linked Book, it appears this message: "Link-it is already running. This instance will not be started."

Answer:

To prevent that Link-it is started twice and that the double processes cause problems, a check has been built in. When Link-it or a Linked book is started we check to see if any program with the following names are running:
  • Link-it Create
  • Link-it Use
  • Linked Book
  • Link-it Demo
If there is a process with this name, the dialog "Link-it is already running. This instance will not be started." is displayed.

Unfortunately in older versions of Linked books this applies to all windows that are open.
E.g. if you have a Word document running and the name contains any of the forbidden words the program will think that this program is already running. This also applies to the Explorer. If you start a linked book from the folder "Linked Books Distribution" the title of the Explorer will contain the phrase "Linked book." This is why you will get the message that Link-it is already running.

This is an unfortunate and a little bit embarrassing mistake we have made. In Link-it Create version 1.5.0 we have solved this problem (Dec -03).

Solutions

  • You have created the Linked book:
= Uppdate Link-it Create and remake your Linked book.
  • Someone else has created the Linked book:
= Close all windows or processes that contains any of the forbidden words then start the Linked book.
If you have created the linked book and you can't update then you can solve it like this:
  • Don't name Linked books anything that contains the phrase "Linked book".
  • Don't place a Linked book in a folder that contains the phrase "Linked book". (This also applies to overall folders).
  • When you create a Linked book in the computer, don't create it in Linked books distribution, but choose another folder.
If you want to you can go to Link-it Create's system and make changes so that any Linked books you will create in the future are saved in a folder that doesn't contain the forbidden phrase:

1. Change the folder's "Linked Books Distribution" in "My Documents" name to till "LinkedBooks Distribution" (Linked books can then be started from there).

2. Go C:\Program\Linkit\LinkitCreate and open the file PromptFile.ini

3. Change Linked Books to LinkedBooks (the space is removed) on the row:
---

[General]
LinkedBookFolder=\Linked Books Distribution\
---

It should look like this:
LinkedBookFolder=\LinkedBooks Distribution\
To get the text in the Create Linked book dialog to be correct, you also need to change this row:
---

[frmNewSaveLnkLst]
lblMakeLinkedBookHelp=Your Linked Book will be created under My Documents/Linked Books distribution
---

It should look like this:
lblMakeLinkedBookHelp=Your Linked Book will be created under My Documents/LinkedBooks distribution.
