Welcome to Åsbackaskolan in Gnesta
- a School that adapts to its students -
Åsbackaskolan is a National Special School for deaf and hearing-impaired students with additional developmental disabilities. The School is also open for children whith congenital deafblindness. The students' age range from 7 to 17 years and they have the Swedish Sign Language (SSL) and Swedish as their common languages. In the year 2008-2009 there are 38 students at our school.
Communication and “Learning by experiences"
At Åsbackaskolan we possess considerable knowledge in the field of Special Education and we understand the students´ need for individual adaptation concerning environment and communication.
The most common languages at our school is the SSL and Swedish, (both spoken and written). Beside those languages, we use several other methods of communication, all adapted to each student´s needs.
Our main task is to help our students understand reality. In order to reach that goal, we teach by shared experiences and real-life activities. We often use nature as a classroom and we also have a newly built playground, adapted to all our students´ needs. It is regularly used as a pedagogical environment.
Starting in the first grade, the curriculum includes activities such as art, drama, sewing and woodwork that constructively engage all the senses.
Everyday activities are included in the regular school curriculum to provide a basis for the students to manage their own personal care and social activities throughout their lives - according to their own capabilities.
One of our traditions is for new students to saw out and paint a wooden bird. The bird i s hung on the school wall and remains there throughout the student´s stay at the school. It is removed from the wall and given to the student on the last day of school as a memento.
